ETA® Fiber Optic Technician


Our 5-day ETA® approved Fiber Optics Technician (FOT) course is designed for individuals who have at least 2 years of hands-on working experience as a fiber optic installer AND have successfully completed an entry level fiber optic training course. The FOI certification is preferred. You will be expected to be proficient with basic fiber optic termination, splicing, testing and troubleshooting techniques. This course is perfect for someone looking to advance their skill level to Journeyman in the fiber optics industry.

By becoming an ETA® certified FOT, must be able to accurately install, terminate, test, and troubleshoot fiber optic communication systems used in premises, LANs, enterprise and data center installations. This includes various techniques applicable to gigabit multimode and single-mode systems consisting of unique test requirements in Ethernet and Fiber Channel, but also pertinent to FTTx, security systems, and IPTV.  The FOTP technician must recognize the various types – IEC defined OM2, 3, 4 & 5 multimode – and OS2 single-mode fibers along with the various proper launch conditions used when testing fiber spans as also defined by the TIA-568 and TIA-942 standards. FOT technicians must similarly comprehend various fiber optic cable connector types and termination used in these networks, using best practices for installing and testing fiber links.

An FOT technician will gain the knowledge and skills required for proper installation, preparing optical loss budgets, splicing, repairing, terminating, connecting, testing and troubleshooting of multimode and single-mode fiber optic links. This will include knowledge and skills include identifying the roles of attenuation, dispersion and reflection by optical loss testing of transmission equipment along with an understanding of OTDRs including acceptance testing and troubleshooting fiber optic elements and spans. The FOT technician should have an advanced understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC®) and all safety conditions specific to inside and outside plant applications.

The course material prepares each student for the ETA® CFOT examination. You will be guided every step of the way through the Skills Testing part of the program, as you perform all of the tasks necessary to become a Certified Fiber Optics Installer. You will be working with the latest and most advanced fiber optics tools and test equipment available! Each student will be given a manual to keep and their own tool and termination kit to use during training. We utilize the latest termination, polishing, splicing and ISP & OSP test and certification equipment from leading fiber optic industry manufacturers such as Fluke, AFL, Noyes, Fujikura and more.

Upon successful completing of the “hands-on” Skills Testing portion of the course, you may take the seventy-five (75) question multiple choice ETA® CFOT exam. You must receive a passing score of 75% or better (19 wrong or less) on the written exam and pass the Skills Testing portion of the course to earn your certification as a Fiber Optics Technician through this program.
